The Basics Of Lacrosse posted by Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport that is mainly played in North America, but has still not gained much popularity. The origins of this game can be traced back to 1100 AD, and it was mainly played by indigenous people of the continent. It became more established in the seventeenth century, and Jesuit missionary priests had documented the game being played somewhere in Canada. However, the game has undergone several changes since then.
Presently Lacrosse is played with a small rubber ball and a lacrosse stick, which has a loose mesh at one end for holding and catching the ball. The objective of the game is to shoot the ball into the goal of the opponent. The ball can only be carried, passed, and caught with the lacrosse stick, and the other team will try to stop the ball from being shot into their goal by positioning, body contact, and stick checking. In the field, players take four major positions, which are the goalie, defense, attack, and midfield. Lacrosse has four main types that include Intercrosse, Box Lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and men's field lacrosse.
In field lacrosse, each team will have 10 players, consisting of one goalie, three defenders, three midfielders, and three attackers. In the game, attackers, typically use a short lacrosse stick, whereas the defenders use a longer lacrosse stick. The defenders could use either type of stick; however, only four players of each team can use the long lacrosse stick at a time. The lacrosse field is 55 meters wide and 100 meters long, and the goals measure 6 x 6 feet. The defensive and offensive areas are surrounded by restraining boxes. The game starts with a face-off, where two players place their sticks next to the ball in a horizontal position. The face-off starts with scrapping for the ball, and clamping it inside the mesh, and passing the ball by flicking it to other players.
